Our next Covenant Commentary, Preventing Summer Slide: How Parents Can Help Their Children Maintain Academic Progress Over the Summer Vacation, will be held on Friday, May 31st during the Covenant Parent Connection meeting at 8:45 am.
This commentary will target elementary-aged learners.
Summer can sometimes bring a dip in academic progress for elementary students, known as the “summer slide.” However, parents can play a crucial role in keeping their kids academically engaged and advancing during these months. Grammar School Principal Andrea Bergstrom will explain how simple activities like reading together, exploring educational projects, or even incorporating learning into everyday tasks like cooking or gardening can make a big difference. Join us to hear about and share suggestions for staying proactive and making learning fun to help prevent the summer slide and ensure your child starts the new school year on the right foot.
This session will be recorded for those who cannot attend.

Teacher Appreciation Week
Special thanks to our Covenant Parent Connection and all the CCA families who contributed to honoring our amazing faculty for Teacher Appreciation Week last week. Each day brought a different spread including a Candy Shop, a Snacks & Drinks day, a Gourmet Lunch, a Breakfast Buffet, and a Grab-n-Go Dessert Bar. Thank you to our faculty who inspire, motivate, and guide our students every day. Your hard work and commitment make the world a better place, one lesson at a time. We love and appreciate you!

Spring Cleaning: Revamping Basement and Storage Spaces
Bob and Franny from our facilities crew, along with some student workers, spent Saturday morning filling a dumpster by cleaning out and organizing the basement, the storage area by the USLR loading dock, and a few other areas around campus. Thanks for taking the time to make CCA shine!

Dig In and Grow Together: Join the Classical Roots Summer Program for Gardening Fun!Fridays During the Summer | 10:00 am–12:00 pm | CCA Vegetable Garden and Orchard
The Classical Roots Program is looking for CCA families who want to get their hands dirty!
Each Friday during the summer, our student volunteers are looking for some help weeding, watering, and harvesting in our school vegetable garden and orchard. When you and your family arrive, a faculty representative and student volunteer will meet you, provide tools and know-how, and assign you this week’s gardening tasks. The reward? You and your kids get to learn about organic gardening.
The icing on the cake? You get to take home any fresh herbs and vegetables that are ripe and ready for free as our way of saying thanks! Sessions run from 10:00 am to around 12:00 pm.

Seasonal AllergiesAs the weather gets warmer, students will continue to enjoy more time outside during the school day. We have seen a dramatic increase in students suffering from seasonal allergies in the past week. If your student has a history of seasonal allergies, please consult your child’s pediatrician, and consider giving them an over-the-counter antihistamine at home if indicated. Please note we do not have medications like Claritin or Zyrtec at school, and can not give any medication without a doctor’s order. Also, we encourage you to consider applying sunscreen to your child in the morning before school each day. For those students whose classes spend time in the back field for gym or recess, you may also want to consider applying bug spray as well. Please do not send sunscreen or bug spray with your child to school, as we are not permitted to apply it. |

Exploring Energy: Calorimetry Experiment in Ms. Beaman’s Chemistry Class
This week Ms. Beaman’s chemistry class did a calorimetry experiment where they burned various snack foods and measured how much energy came from each. They will then compare their data to the information on the nutrition labels of the foods. They successfully burned marshmallows, cheese curls, and popcorn. With the cheese curls burning the best, it was speculated that they would make good fire starters.

Embracing Reflection: Eighth-Grade Threshold Speeches
Eighth-graders delivered their Threshold Speeches this week. Threshold is the culmination of the eighth-grade year at Covenant, where each student has to share an 8-minute personal story reflecting something that has greatly impacted their lives in front of an audience of nearly 100 of their peers, family, and teachers. Along with their speech, they share a piece of artwork they created related to their story. These students presented with eloquence, humility, and tenacity, and are beginning to demonstrate the qualities of a CCA graduate.

Cougars Round-Up
VARSITY TRACK & FIELD
Saturday, May 4th:
With a last chance to beat a personal record (PR) and a last chance to qualify for the New England Championships the Cougars descended on Austin Prep for the final regular season meet. Some highlights were PRs with Michaela Ray breaking the magical 4’ barrier in the high jump, Shepherd Gladden throwing the javelin over 110’, Anne Hammond breaking her own school record in the javelin with an 83’ 7” throw, Matthew Stuart’s school record shot put of 33’ 1”, and Ryan Jones lowering his PR to 2:17.91 in the 800m. In the 300m hurdles, Gianna DiMattia qualified for the Championships smashing her own best by over 3 seconds with a 57.12, and Isaac followed with a new school record at 45.95 seconds. Colin Moll qualified for the Championships with his 49.58.
The girls’ 4×100 relay team broke the school record with Anna Jukanovich, Liza Minogue, Greta Baird, and Carys Walters coming in at 53.54 seconds.
Not to be outdone, the boys 4×400 team lowered the school record to 3:52.91 with blistering legs with Ryan Jones, Dylan Curtis, Lukas Badaro, and Isaac Portugal each going sub-60.
The girls came in 2nd out of eight schools and the boys placed 3rd.

Tuesday was Senior Day for the Girls Varsity Softball team. The Cougars pulled off an 18-14 win at home against Boston Trinity Academy. CCA seniors, Victoria Gladden and Abigail Verrengia, were honored and celebrated.
VARSITY ULTIMATE FRISBEE
Monday, May 13th:
CCA 12, Gann 5
The game against Gann was a resounding victory for the Varsity Ultimate Frisbee team as they beat Gann 12-5 in an incredible effort from the whole team. Gann was a team they lost to 15-2 in the first game of the season so the players were ready to have a rematch. Simeon and Tristan were on another level on the Offense and linked up for 10 of the 12 points. Mikey put on a show on the defensive side and locked down the deep zone, getting multiple interceptions and pass deflections, while both Simeon and Caleb got handblocks leading to eventual CCA scores. All around, the team played their hearts out and left it all on the field for an incredible win against the best team in the league.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ULTIMATE FRISBEE
CCA 6, Gann 10
The Middle School Ultimate Frisbee team played a great game against Gann at home. Although the Cougars lost 10-6, they worked well together and learned a lot. They competed strongly against an all-high school team in one of their best performances of the season. A few highlights were: Jack T. threw massive hammers toward the end of the game, Evie C. almost caught it with her shin, Lila O. and Addy B. played intense defense–diving in front of opposing players to force turnovers, Elliot S. made several great jumping plays both catching and defending the disc, Nate J. caught several scores and had the quickness to get open repeatedly, Phoebe S. was fearless to pick up the disc and advance it while also being a rugged defender, and Evie C. and Kaden L. running give-and-go passes to create openings for long throws downfield.

Favor Ezewuzie (‘16) just earned her master’s in education from Clemson University. Favor was the salutatorian of her class at CCA. She went on to graduate from Wheaton College in 2020 where she was an accomplished runner on their track and field team. Due to her senior season being cut short by COVID, Favor was granted an additional year to compete as a college student so she enrolled at Clemson University and ran as an NCAA Division I athlete. Congratulations, Favor! |
