NURSE’S NOTES

Head Lice: Awareness and Prevention

Pediculosis, also known as “head lice,” are tiny insects (approximately the size of a sesame seed) that live only on people’s scalp and hair. They hatch from small eggs, called nits, that are firmly attached to individual hairs near the scalp. The major symptom of head lice is itching, but some younger children may also describe it by saying their head hurts. Lice do not jump, rather they are spread only when they crawl from person to person directly or crawl onto shared personal items such as combs and brushes, hats and hair accessories, clothing, bedding, or towels. Diagnosis is usually made through detecting the nits attached to hairs near the scalp. Treatment consists of killing the lice on the individual by using medicated shampoo, and properly cleaning the individual’s surroundings and personal items.

While head lice is often spread among members of the same household, it can also be spread in the school setting. Note that having lice does not mean someone is dirty or has poor hygiene… Anyone can get lice after close contact with an infested individual or their personal items. You can help prevent the transmission of lice by not sharing personal items such as combs, brushes, hats, etc. both at home and at school. It’s also important to periodically check your student and family’s head for lice, and receive treatment as soon as possible if detected.

For more information, please click HERE to visit the MDPH fact sheet regarding head lice. If you have any questions, please contact your healthcare provider, or you may email school.nurse@ccamail.org.

Exploring Stories: 8th Graders Share Their Summer Reading Adventures

Last week, Mrs. Russell’s 8th graders talked about their Summer Reading Library Adventure. They eloquently gave mini-plot summaries of the books they read. They compared various book covers of each of the books on their reading list. They also discussed how “presentation matters”, and how sometimes the “presentation does not match what’s inside the book”. This can be true of many things in life!

Life Skills: 9th Graders Learn to Build Fires

This week, Mrs. Sprague’s 9th graders participated in their first hands-on Life Skills class, where they learned how to build fires. They focused on constructing a log cabin fire, known for its stability and effective heat distribution for cooking. The students did an outstanding job and had a fantastic time!

Cougars RoundUp!

It was a great all-around start to the season this week.

Thursday, 9/12:

Girls JV Volleyball: CCA 2 vs Landmark 0 (25-17, 25-10)

The Girls JV Volleyball team showcased impressive teamwork in last Thursday’s game against Landmark. They demonstrated the significance of serving and communicating effectively on the court, maintaining their energy and focus until the final whistle.

Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs Landmark 0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-17)

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Landmark School last Thursday, where they secured a straight sets victory: 27-25, 25-15, 25-17. The girls dominated much of the match from behind the service line, led by Leanna Rothier (’27), Riley Baird (’25), and Fernanda Silva-Fernandes (’25). Almost every player made important defensive plays to keep the ball in play – and it was their communication and teamwork that ultimately won them the match.

Friday, 9/13:

Boys Varsity Soccer: CCA 2 vs CHCH 0

The CCA Cougars faced off against Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall on Friday in a hard-fought match. The first half ended scoreless, adding to the intensity of the second half. Goalie Caz Ostrowski (’25) made some incredible saves, keeping a clean sheet throughout the game. Fueled by determination, the boys entered the second half ready to take charge, leading to the first goal by Jacob Libby (’25). Libby followed up with another goal, sealing the victory at 2-0. With 10 minutes remaining, neither team found the net, allowing the CCA boys to celebrate their hard-earned win over CHCH!

Girls Varsity Soccer: CCA 8 vs CHCH 0

CCA improved to 2-0 with a dominant 8-0 victory over Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall in their Independent Girls Conference matchup. Striker Novalee Jones (’27) scored two goals in the first half, giving CCA a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Cougars then exploded in the second half, netting six additional goals. Jones completed her hat trick, while Anna Jukanovich (’25) contributed her first two goals of the season. Other goal scorers included Leah McEachern (’26) (with her second goal of the season), Anne Hammond (’25), and Auldyn Anastasi (’27).

Monday, 9/16:

Girls JV Volleyball: CCA 2 vs Montrose 0 (25-17, 25-23)

The girls JV team started off a bit nervous but quickly found their rhythm. In the second set, they staged an impressive comeback from a 15-point deficit to secure the win. Their teamwork and synergy allowed them to flow seamlessly on the court and ultimately find their groove!

Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs Montrose 1 (19-25, 25-18, 25-13, 26-24)

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team traveled to Montrose on Monday night for a heavyweight clash in the Independent Girls Conference and emerged victorious with a 4-set victory: 19-25, 25-18, 25-13, 26-24. The team was led on offense by Leanna Rothier (’27), who had 17 kills. Julia Ray (’25) contributed 9 kills and 5 service aces, and setter Riley Baird (’25) had 30 assists and 9 service aces. On defense, Madeleine Trumbull (’25) made several solo blocks and hustle plays, and Allie Freedman (’26) was all over the court. This was a big road win for the team, and it continues their solid start to the season!

Girls MS Soccer: CCA 1 vs Tower 4

CCA faced a challenging opponent in Tower, which was significantly older and more experienced. Despite this, CCA started strong, moving the ball well and applying pressure, but they quickly fell behind with two early goals. Just before halftime, Bella D (’29) found the net for CCA with an assist from Natalie P (’29). In the second half, CCA kept pushing and fighting hard, but they struggled to penetrate Tower’s strong defense. Tower added two more goals, ending the game with a final score of 4-1.

Boys Varsity Soccer: CCA 11 vs Marie Philips 1

The CCA boys played an amazing game against Marie Philips with a final score of 11-1. During the first five minutes of the game, the team scored 2 goals, the first by Jacob Libby (’25) followed by Bennett Plosker (’25). The next three goals were scored by Wes Libby (’28), Tristan Viera (’26), and Lukas Badaro (’25). They wrapped up the first half with a score of 5-0. Marie Philips came into the second half trying to make a comeback, and scored their first goal, however, the Cougars responded with the same intensity, as they went on to score 6 more goals. Jacob Libby scored yet another goal, followed by Isaac Portugal (’25). Nathan Cerqueira (’27) played extremely well today, scoring two goals in a row. Ethan Velasquez-Perdomo (’27) scored next with the final goal scored by Tristen Viera. The boys ended the game in a decisive victory of 11-1 over Marie Philips. The Cougars look forward to their next matchup against Cambridge School of Weston at home on Friday, September 20th.

Middle School Cross Country:

The CCA Middle School Cross Country team competed against Tower School and Marblehead Charter yesterday in Marblehead. All four Cougar runners delivered impressive performances in their season-opening 2-mile race. Drew M (’29) secured first place with a time just over 14 minutes. William N (’30) finished strong in third place at 18:20, while Yasmine S (’30) took fourth with a time of 18:52. Izzy M (’30) also ran well, clocking in at 21 minutes and finishing 14th. With a total of 32 runners in the race, the entire CCA team showed great determination. Fantastic job, Cougars!

Tuesday, 9/17:

Girls Varsity Soccer: CCA 6 vs Penguin Hall 0

In a complete team effort, the Cougars triumphed over non-league opponent, Academy at Penguin Hall, with a decisive 6-0 victory, improving their record to 3-0 this season. Each of the six goals came from different players, highlighting CCA’s balanced attack and strong possession. In the first half, Leah McEachern (’26), Gianna Chamberlain (’26), and Auldyn Anastasi (’27) found the net. The second half continued in the same vein, with Anna Jukanovich (’25), Nova Jones (’27), and Carys Walters (’25) scoring as CCA maintained control and created numerous scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper and captain Isabella DeCotis (’25) recorded her second consecutive clean sheet, backed by a solid defensive effort from the back line, led by captain Ellie Landymore (’25), Evie Hammond (’25), Elsa Williams (’25), and Samantha Seiler (’28). The Cougars look forward to their next IGC matchup against Brimmer & May at home on Friday, September 20th.

Wednesday, 9/18:

Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs Marie Philip 0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-11)

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team hosted Marie Philip on Wednesday, and they increased their winning streak to 4 with a convincing straight-sets victory: 25-7, 25-16, 25-11. Every player made meaningful contributions to the win. The story of the night was strong serving, led by Riley Baird (’25) with 11 aces, Leanna Rothier (’27) with 7 aces, and Julia Ray (’25) with 6 aces. Because of the strong service game, the Cougars’ attack was only called upon occasionally, with Julia (7 kills) and Leanna (6 kills) leading the way. Liberos Allie Freedman (’26) and Ella Chewning (’25) anchored the Cougars’ defense.

The girls varsity team will be back in action on Friday, when they travel to CHCH.

MEET OUR TEAM

Join us in welcoming Erica Monteiro to the Grammar School team!

Mrs. Monteiro comes to us as a parent of current CCA first grader, Penelope. She is an experienced second grade teacher having served most recently in Everett Public Schools. Erica has a passion for teaching and is excited to team up together with Mrs. Burns to provide an outstanding experience for our second grade students.

What will your role be here? 2nd grade teacher

Can you tell us a bit about your background and previous experience? Before I was a teacher, I was a Social Worker within a school. I wanted to be a more constant person in my students’ lives so I chose to go back to school to become a teacher. I graduated from Lesley University in 2014 and started working in Everett Public Schools right away. I have been teaching second grade ever since.

What drew you to join CCA? My daughter has been attending for three years now. After my first Back-to-School Night, I knew I wanted to be a teacher here. The community is full of kindness and a love for God.

What are you most looking forward to this school year? Making lots of memories with my first second grade class at CCA.

Favorite food: Chicken Marsala with gluten free pasta

Favorite book: Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae – love reading this to my children

Favorite Bible verse: 2 Corinthians 12:9: “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work? I love spending time with my family, whether we are home or away. We enjoy going to new restaurants and trying new foods.

Share a fun or unique fact about yourself: My favorite color is purple but I own no purple clothing.

If you were to participate in the USLR Lip Sync Battle, which song would you sing?

N*SYNC – any song

If you were to participate in the GS Star Wars dress-down day, which character would you be? Chewbacca, cause why not!

Is there anything you’d like to say to the community as you start your journey here?

I am so grateful to be part of the CCA community. I look forward to what God has in store for all of us.

We’re glad you’re here, Erica!
