PneumoniaPneumonia is an infection (caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi), where the air sacs of the lungs become inflamed and fill with fluid or mucus. Pneumonia in itself is not contagious, but the organisms that cause infection are transmissible. Typically the body fights these germs that enter the body before they infect the lungs, but sometimes the germs overwhelm the immune system and cause a more serious infection. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and may include productive cough with phlegm, chest pain with coughing or breathing, shortness of breath, fever, and fatigue. Pneumonia can be diagnosed by a doctor upon exam, which may include listening to the lungs, pulse oximetry, and a chest x-ray. Treatments often include medications such as antibiotics, inhalers, and cough medicine. Over the past few weeks, we have been hearing an increasing number of students with intense coughing. Unfortunately, we have also been notified of several diagnosed cases of pneumonia as well. With the winter season around the corner, it’s important to protect yourself and your family against illness. Remember to practice good hand hygiene by washing hands frequently or using hand sanitizer. Consider eating a healthy diet, drinking adequate water, and getting enough sleep to help keep your immune system strong. At CCA, we continue to take measures in helping prevent the spread of disease, including air filtration and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces. If your student has ongoing or severe symptoms of cough or fever, please consult their physician. For additional information about pneumonia, click this link from the CDC, or consult your family physician. |

Operation Christmas Child: A Simple Gift with a Big ImpactBoxes due: Wednesday, November 20th
We are once again excited to provide you with an opportunity to participate in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child initiative this holiday season. This is a wonderful way to share the love of Christ with children living in poverty around the world—many of whom may receive their very first Christmas gift through your generosity. Here’s how you can get involved:
Although this time of year can be filled with charitable requests, we believe hands-on service initiatives like Operation Christmas Child help our students better understand poverty, privilege, and compassion for others.
We are also looking for two parents who would be willing to help deliver boxes to a nearby drop-off site on Thursday, November 21st or Friday, November 22nd.
We hope you’ll consider participating in this meaningful initiative, and thank you for your generosity and heart for those in need. Let’s make this Christmas brighter for children around the world!
Questions about the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child, or to volunteer your help, contact Grammar School Principal Andrea Bergstrom: andrea.bergstrom@ccamail.org. |

Advisory Conversation with Mr. Offner: Material Order and the Art of Noticing
Mr. Offner, USLR Principal, discussed with USLR students the importance of creating order and enjoying it rather than creating disorder and tolerating it. He shared a vision for what our school could and ought to be if we take care of our space and each other, and sought to instill in students the hope and the vocabulary needed to engage in conversations about creating and sustaining an orderly environment at school. |

RS Students Hold Mock Election of 1800
In the historical election of 1800, Massachusetts threw its weight behind the home-state candidate John Adams. In fact, he won all of New England! However, times have changed, and by a vote of 74-63, Thomas Jefferson won CCA’s mock-election of 1800.
USLR students and faculty were able to vote for either John Adams and the Federalist party or Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans. Early voting booths were set up for the Girls Varsity Soccer team who had to leave early for a post-season game. Juniors in Mr. Wegrzyn’s AP US History class were tasked with campaigning for each party and were available to answer questions on the issues which distinguished each candidate!

Cougars RoundUp!
Thursday, October 31st:
CCA hosted a triple-header for post-season Varsity sports:
- The Girls Varsity Soccer team played a semi-finals match against Brimmer & May.
- The Boys Varsity Soccer team played in a semi-finals match against Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall.
- The Girls Varsity Volleyball team hosted the Championship match against Montrose.
Girls Varsity Volleyball IGC Championship: CCA 3, Montrose 1
The girls volleyball team hosted Montrose for the IGC championship match on Thursday, and they won in front of a packed PAAC in four sets: 25-27, 25-14, 25-22, 25-13. Our girls are IGC champs! After allowing a tight first set to slip away with some untimely service errors, the energy of the match began to turn in favor of the Cougars thanks to the defense of Riley Baird (’25) and Magdalen Miller (’25), who made back-to-back blocks at the beginning of the 2nd set to fire up the team and the crowd. The girls then amped up the service pressure, led by Leanna Rothier (’27), Maley Adair (’26), and Ella Chewning (’25), which carried them to a 2nd set victory. The 3rd set featured a variety of back-and-forth play between the two teams, and the Cougars were able to unleash their offensive firepower, led once again by Leanna who had 16 kills on the night, Julia Ray (’25) who had 10 kills, and Magdalen who added 5 more. In the 4th set, the Cougars built another big lead with their serves, this time relying upon Riley, Leanna, and Magdalen. And with ice in her veins – and much of the student body standing to her right, ready to rush the court – Maley served an ace to win championship point. With this victory, the Cougars won their first IGC volleyball championship, and they finished their IGC season with a perfect 14-0 record in conference. This accomplishment culminated with this game, but it is about much more than that – it is the result of the focus, faithfulness, selflessness, and teamwork of this group of 12 girls in every practice and every game throughout this season (and, for many of them, throughout multiple seasons).
Allie, Ella, Fernanda, Julia, Leanna, Lexi, Libby, Madeleine, Magdalen, Maley, Riley, Shirley – well done!
Girls Varsity Soccer IGC Semi-finals: CCA 1, Brimmer 0
#2 seeded CCA hosted #6 Brimmer & May for the IGC Semifinal on Thursday. The two teams played a close game earlier in the season and this one was no different. CCA attacked early with some good chances, but were unable to score. Brimmer & May’s pace up front tested the Cougars backline, but continued stellar play from that group thwarted the Gators attack. The two teams entered halftime tied 0-0. In the second half, CCA gained more consistent possession and created multiple good scoring chances. In the 65th minute, left back, Elsa Williams (’25) delivered a great ball into the box. Striker Gianna Chamberlain (’26) got a touch to the ball and played it to Carys Walters (’25) who was cutting in from the right wing. Walters hit the ball with a first-time touch, left footed from 12 yards out and buried it into the net to give CCA the lead. CCA defended well including a goal line clearance from Walters and great solid keeping from Isabella DeCotis (’25). The Cougars (11-1-2) kept the clean sheet and advanced to the IGC finals with a 1-0 win!
Boys Varsity Soccer MBIL Semi-finals: CCA 3, Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall 2
As the CCA Cougars entered the Semi-finals, they secured their first victory over Chapel Hill-Chauncy Hall. In the first five minutes of the game, Jacob Libby (’25) scored the team their first goal with an assist from Isaac Portugal (’25). Libby went on to score a second goal. However, CHCH responded in the last five minutes by scoring, ending the first half in a score of 2-1. Both teams entered the second half, ready to secure a victory. This would not last for long, as Jacob Libby headed the ball into the net after a corner kick from Isaac Portugal, providing the team with another goal. After receiving a PK, CHCH added another point. The game ended with a score of 3-2, the victory belonging to the CCA boys varsity soccer team, securing a win in the semi-finals match.
Monday, November 4th:
Boys Varsity Soccer MBIL Championship: CCA 0, Gann 5
The CCA Cougars played a hard-fought game as they faced off against Gann Academy during the finals. Both teams were holding their own during the first half and skillfully matched. However, Gann Academy soon scored their first goal. The Cougars retained hope and continued playing methodically. Towards the last five minutes, Gann scored yet another goal, ending the first half with a score of 0-2. When the second half began, both teams re-entered with extreme determination. Despite their strong motivation, the boys could not hold back Gann, as they scored three more points in the second half. The game ended in a definitive score of 0-5, with Gann Academy securing the league championship.
We’re so proud of all our student-athletes for an amazing fall sports season.
