Covenant Commentaries

Friday, May 31st | 8:45 am | CCA Cafeteria

Our last Covenant Commentary, Preventing Summer Slide: How Parents Can Help Their Children Maintain Academic Progress Over the Summer Vacation, will be held on Friday, May 31st during the Covenant Parent Connection meeting at 8:45 am.

This commentary will target elementary-aged learners.

Summer can sometimes bring a dip in academic progress for elementary students, known as the “summer slide.” However, parents can play a crucial role in keeping their kids academically engaged and advancing during these months. Grammar School Principal Andrea Bergstrom will explain how simple activities like reading together, exploring educational projects, or even incorporating learning into everyday tasks like cooking or gardening can make a big difference. Join us to hear about and share suggestions for staying proactive and making learning fun to help prevent the summer slide and ensure your child starts the new school year on the right foot.

This session will be recorded for those who cannot attend.

If you have questions about Covenant Commentaries or would like to suggest topics for future Commentaries, please contact Nicole Wise Williams, Chief Advancement Officer, at nicole.williams@ccamail.org.

Dig In and Grow Together: Join the Classical Roots Summer Program for Gardening Fun!

Fridays During the Summer | 10:00 am–12:00 pm | CCA Vegetable Garden and Orchard

There are still spots open for families who want to get their hands dirty this summer!

Classical Roots Program is looking for CCA families to help with weeding, watering, and harvesting in our school vegetable garden and orchard each Friday during the summer. When you and your family arrive, a faculty representative and student volunteer will meet you, provide tools and know-how, and assign you the week’s gardening tasks.

The reward? You and your kids get to learn about organic gardening.

The icing on the cake? You get to take home any fresh herbs and vegetables that are ripe and ready for free as our way of saying thanks! Sessions run from 10:00 am to around 12:00 pm.

Sign up for a day here.

Please direct any questions about this program to Alex Miller at alex.miller@ccamail.org.

Family Referral Incentive Program

Covenant experienced its 11th consecutive year of record enrollment in the 2023-2024 school year! God continues to bless CCA, and we are always seeking to welcome mission-aligned families to our community.

We have a Family Referral Incentive Program to both incentivize and reward CCA parents and employees. Our parents, students, and employees are our best ambassadors, sharing their positive experiences at Covenant with friends, family, and acquaintances.

Current CCA families, as well as faculty and staff members, can receive a $500 referral bonus for each new family that they refer (who then applies to CCA, is accepted, and enrolls for the 2024/25 school year). The Family Referral Program does not apply to immediate family members or persons living in the same household.

While many grade levels have already reached capacity for next year, we do have space open in some grades such as Pre-K and Kindergarten. Please contact Admissions for more details: admissions@ccamail.org

SCHOOL NURSE

Seasonal Allergies

As the weather gets warmer, students will continue to enjoy more time outside during the school day.

We have seen a dramatic increase in students suffering from seasonal allergies in the past week. If your student has a history of seasonal allergies, please consult your child’s pediatrician, and consider giving them an over-the-counter antihistamine at home if indicated. Please note we do not have medications like Claritin or Zyrtec at school, and can not give any medication without a doctor’s order.

Also, we encourage you to consider applying sunscreen to your child in the morning before school each day. For those students whose classes spend time in the backfield for gym or recess, you may also want to consider applying bug spray as well. Please do not send sunscreen or bug spray with your child to school, as we are not permitted to apply it.

Senior Prank: Inside Out and Upside Down!

A long-standing tradition at Covenant is the Senior Prank, where our graduating seniors engage in a playful, lighthearted, and sometimes mischievous act to leave their mark on the school before moving on to the next stage of their lives. This year, the seniors turned the classrooms inside out and upside down! Here’s a snippet of what faculty and staff walked into last Friday.

Rhetoric School: Last Chapel

The last Rhetoric School Chapel of the year was held in the Courtyard yesterday. We heard from our student-voted 2024 Distinguished Faculty, Richelle Denman-Joseph. She had an engaging message for our graduating seniors about how they’ve been nurtured here at Covenant and what it means to leave here well and “give back” the nurture they’ve received to others.

Logic School: Last Chapel

We held our last Logic School Chapel of the year in the Small Gym yesterday with worship by Mr. Lawrenz and Mr. Ingersoll. Parents of 8th graders were invited to attend as each student moving on was presented with a personalized bible signed by faculty and staff. We celebrated the end of their time in LS with refreshments, a video slideshow, and a prayer circle around all of our 8th graders.

FINE ARTS

Ms. Cohen’s Students Shine at End-of-Year Recital

Ms. Cohen organized a special recital for her students, which took place last Saturday at West Church. The event provided her students with a unique opportunity to showcase their musical talents on a baby grand piano, fostering their love for music and encouraging their growth as young musicians.

ATHLETICS

Lila Kenis Commits to DIII Rowing Team at Gordon College

Congratulations to Lila Kenis who signed her Letter of Intent on Wednesday in front of her coach, teachers, and peers. Lila will be rowing for Gordon College’s Division III team next year. We’re proud of you, Lila!

VARSITY TRACK & FIELD

It’s a wrap! This past Saturday, 18 members of the Cougars Varsity Track and Field Team traveled to Thompson, Connecticut to compete against 34 other teams in the New England Preparatory School Track Association DIII Championships. The girls 4×100 relay team with Anna Jukanovich, Julia Ray, Liza Minogue, and Carys Walters ran a brilliant race, coming in 4th and earning All NAPSTA Honors while smashing the school record with a time of 53.02 seconds. Also earning All NAPSTA Honors were Lukas Badaro, 4th in the High Jump, and Jacob Libby, 5th in the javelin. Earning the NAPSTA Honorable Mention Award were Isaac Portugal, 8th in the 300m hurdles, and Julia Ray, 7th in the High Jump and 7th in the 300m hurdles.

On Sunday evening, the team celebrated the successes of the year with its annual dinner and awards ceremony. Every athlete’s contributions to the team and performance on the track were celebrated. Then the awards were granted with Most Improved Athlete going to Isaac Portugal and Gianna DiMattia and the Coaches Award conferred on Dylan Curtis and Greta Baird. The Most Valuable Athlete awards were given to Anne Hammond and, for the second year in a row, Jacob Libby. Wrapping up the evening, the coaches announced the 2025 team captains: Isaac Portugal, Carys Walters, Jacob Libby, and Julia Ray.

Looking forward to the 2025 season!

Update from Zack Simonton (’12)

It’s been over 10 years since I graduated from CCA and in that span of time much has changed. I didn’t become a game artist (but that’s still something I aspire to, I just need to continue to develop my skills), I work in the IT department for a vitamin company called MegaFood. But the best job that I’ve recently been given is being a dad! My wife, Rachael, and I welcomed our daughter Constance Joy Simonton into the world on October 3rd, 2023. She’s 7 months old and is the silliest little baby. I still draw, working mostly on bettering my fundamentals so that I can have a good portfolio. Sharing some pictures of Connie below. Hope this update brightens the day of some of my old teachers and fellow alumni!
