SCHOOL NURSE

School Health Reminder: When Should I Keep My Student Home?

We’ve seen an increase in cold and flu symptoms within our school community over the past couple weeks, including coughs, runny noses, sore throats, and fevers. Minor cold symptoms are fairly common and to be expected this time of year; however, it’s important to take appropriate health measures to help avoid the spread of germs.

To promote the health and well-being of our Covenant community, please carefully review the following CCA school health policies about when you should keep your student home:

  1. In the event of diagnosed infectious disease, (such as COVID-19, flu, strep throat, etc.) parents must notify the school nurse.  The student should remain home for the appropriate amount of time according to their doctor’s recommendations.  For COVID-19, follow current isolation and return-to-school guidelines according to the MA Department of Public Health.
  1. Keep student home if they have a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. (Please do NOT medicate your child for fever in the morning, and then send them to school.) Students may return to school after remaining fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication.
  1. Do not send your student to school if they have any of the following symptoms:

Vomiting or diarrhea over the past 24 hours

Copious nasal drainage

Excessive/uncontrollable coughing

Red or pink eyes with crusty and/or yellow/green drainage

For minor symptoms, consider medicating your student at home with over-the-counter cold or allergy medication if applicable prior to school.  Please contact your child’s pediatrician directly if you have questions or concerns regarding ongoing or worsening illness.  Students who present to school sick will be sent to the school nurse for assessment and may be dismissed home.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. As always, please feel free to reach out to the CCA school nurse at 978-535-7100 or school.nurse@ccamail.org if you have any questions.

Each year thousands of children around the country compete for the opportunity to attend regional finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Regional winners are invited to compete in the National Bee in Washington D.C. We are excited to once again be participating in this fun and competitive event.

Logic School representatives will be determined this week. Our Grammar School Finalists are as follows:

Grade 2: Kaelani H., Ronan K.

Grade 3: Damian P., Meadow M.

Grade 4: Gianna S., Timmy P.

Grade 5: Theo G., Olivia P.

Grade 6: Luma Q., Katalina S.

All are welcome to join us for our School Scripps Spelling Bee on Friday, February 2nd at 1:45pm in the Small Gym.

This Week in PreK:

Pre-K students are learning all about verse Psalm 51:7 “Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow.” They took a “field trip” to Ms. Oliver’s Logic School science lab to participate in an experiment where they witnessed unclean water become clean again. This served as an opportunity for the students to see that God can take our mistakes and turn them into something good. This in-school field trip also represents how our teachers are brilliantly bridging the two schools, scripture and science!

This Week in Fourth Grade:

Fourth graders take time each year to study the Human Body. For their yearly chapel, they chose to focus on 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul writes to the church and describes the Body of Christ. He reminds believers that each person has a special role to play in the Christian family, just like each part of the human body has a specific function.  Students recited from 1 Corinthians 12, and then participated in a music skit, showing how the church isn’t always as welcoming as we should be to everyone in the body.

Lunch in the Lab Lecture Series:

CCA Senior Abby Verrengia delivered a fabulous and incredibly interesting Lunch in the Lab Lecture last Friday about The Science of Color Perception. Her lecture was a perfect example of a classical education blending science and art so elegantly.

Please join us for an upcoming Lunch in the Lab Lecture:

January 30th: The Mathematics of Color in Digital Art, presented by William Wei

February 14th: The Chemistry of Love, presented by Sam Crowell, Haley Nelson, and Sophia Jacobson

Lectures take place in the Science Lab during the USLR lunch period. Bring a lunch, learn a bunch!

Science Field Trip with Mrs. O’Riorden

A group of students were given a tour of the Nuclear Research Reactor at UMass Lowell this past week. The tour was led by the facility’s Radiation Safety Officer, Dr. Steven Snay. They were able to see research in action, try out the robotic remote handling tools and see the reactor materials moving into a new position which resulted in a glowing shift caused by Cherenkov Radiation. They ended the tour with an overview of all the different beneficial and peaceful uses of ionizing radiation specific to medical, research and industrial uses.

Roller Coaster Club

Lab Assistant Daniel Gardner hosted the first CCA Roller Coaster Club meeting this week. The group hopes to build model coasters and visit several large roller coasters this year!

Classical Roots council students planted hot peppers last week. This year, the Classical Roots garden will feature the gnarled, waxy, brilliant red Tunisian Baklouti, the main ingredient in Harissa paste, along with brown Jalapenos and the stunning electric-purple Buena Mulata. All three, alongside their more pedestrian cousins, are members of the botanical group Capsicum annuum, a truly multifaceted species that has fueled and flavored global cuisine for centuries.

Cougars Round Up

Boys Varsity Basketball:

Friday, January 19th: CCA: 61, Newman: 33

The Boys Varsity Basketball team took the win against Newman on Friday at home after

playing 9 of their first 10 games on the road! The final score was 61-33 with Bennett Plosker leading in scoring 24 points, and Jacob Chewning and Isaac Portugal turning in some of their best performances of the season, each netting eight points. Way to go, Cougars!

Monday, January 22nd: CCA: 55, Dublin: 68

The Boys Varsity Basketball team had another great opportunity to learn valuable lessons that will serve them well in the most important moments of the season (which are coming leading up to playoffs), including the importance of not starting a game down 15-1. But, as they have shown throughout the season, the guys kept pushing and pushing and pushing until ultimately they were down just five midway through the second half. The boys are learning and growing as a team through each victory and each loss.

Wednesday, January 24th: CCA: 47, Gann: 57

The Boys Varsity Basketball team lost a well fought match against Gann with a final score of 57-47. Coach Bradford shares that in his six seasons as a Varsity Basketball coach at Covenant, we have only beaten Gann one time. The boys showed tenacity and resilience against a team with deep talent and a disciplined style of play.

Girls Varsity Basketball:

January 18th: CCA: 52, Gann: 54

In one of the best games of the season, the CCA Girls Varsity dropped an exciting game to Gann Academy in overtime by the final score of 54-52. Liza Minogue led the Cougars in scoring with 27 while Anne Hammond knocked down three 3-point shots.

January 22nd: CCA: 37, Gann: 34

The CCA Girls Varsity team defeated Gann Academy by the final score of 37-34. Trailing by 11 at the half, the girls fought back and played an inspired 4th quarter outscoring Gann 17-4 to seize a surprising victory. Liza Minogue led all scorers with 24 points while Julia Ray scored 8 and blocked a last second shot to secure the win.

January 24th: CCA: 45, Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall: 31

The Girls Varsity Basketball team defeated CHCH in a spirited contest when CCA celebrated Senior night. Senior Liza Minogue led the scoring with 28 points and Julia Ray chipped in 12, leading the squad to a 45 – 31 victory. This improves the team’s record to 8-4 overall.

Boys JV Basketball:

January 23rd: CCA: 39, British International School of Boston: 49

The Boys JV Basketball team had a tough loss to BISB’s Varsity team. The Cougars were down 29-12 at the half. They came back in the second half with intensity and were able to cut the lead from 17 down to 8 with plenty of time to go and outscored BISB 27-20 in the second half. Although BISB was able to pull off a few key 3-pointers and offensive rebounds that allowed them to push the lead back up. Great effort and enthusiasm all around by our JV squad!

Girls JV Basketball:

January 18th: CCA: 25, Gann: 13

The Girls JV Basketball team traveled to Gann Academy and came home with a 25-13 win. Playing shorthanded, all seven team members entered the scoring column. Praise R, Marie M and Julia B each scored 6 points in this great team win. The girls season record now stands at 4 wins and 2 losses.

January 22nd: CCA: 30, Gann: 7

The Girls JV Basketball game team beat Gann with a final score of 30-7. Marie M. was the top scorer coming in with 12 points. Julia B., Ellie K., and Auldyn A. each had many rebounds. The girls played an awesome game. Keep up the good work, Cougars!

Girls Middle School Basketball:

January 18th: CCA: 15, Glen Urquhart School: 16

The Girls Middle School Basketball team competed against Glen Urquhart School on January 18th at home, in a nail biting game, falling to the opposition in the last moments with a final score of 15-16. Trailing much of the game, the Cougars showed exceptional resilience and fortitude. With less than five minutes remaining and trailing 6-12, the team clawed back to tie it 12 all. Then Lia P. hit a three pointer from the corner to put CCA up 15-12. Two unexpected scores from GUS ended up deciding the game but not without the last second opportunity with a sideline set and an open shot that just wouldn’t fall. Scoring was led by Lia P. and Lucy O.
