First Community and House Appointments!

Community is a special time set aside for our USLR students the last period on Friday of each week. This is an intentional and scheduled time to facilitate the health and development of our student body community. Students are divided into Houses and earn points toward the USLR House Cup competition by engaging in different events and activities. Sometimes, a speaker is invited to talk about our greater community, and sometimes the time is spent serving our community. Students look forward to this special 50 minutes each week.

Last Friday, all new USLR students and faculty members were appointed to either King, Ten Boom, Wilberforce, or Bojaxhiu. Watch this video to learn more about the Houses and what each name represents.

Cougars RoundUp!

It was a great all-around start to the season this week.

Monday, 9/9:

Boys Varsity Soccer: CCA 5  vs. Landmark 1

The CCA Cougars had an amazing start to the season, with their victory over Landmark. In the first half, Jacob Libby (’25) scored the first goal of the season as he headed the ball into the net, after an assist from Isaac Portugal (’25). The next goal was then scored by Bennett Plosker (’25) ending the first half with a score of 2-0. The boys entered the second half ready to win. After a corner kick by Portugal, Wes Libby (’28) earned the Cougars yet another point. Plosker then went on to score two more goals. Landmark scored in the second half, making the final score of the game 5-1.

Come cheer the Cougars on at their away game this Friday, September 13th at 3:30 pm, as they face Chapel Hill Chauncey Hall.

Girls Varsity Soccer: CCA 2 vs. Landmark 1

CCA started the season with a gritty road win at league rival, Landmark school. Right back Samantha Seiler (‘28) opened the scoring just 4 minutes into the new season from 22 yards away with a perfectly placed shot into the upper 90. CCA would add another goal with two minutes left in the half when Carys Walters (‘25) won the ball in the attacking third and played a through ball to Leah McEachern (‘26) who slotted the ball past the keeper.

Landmark scored off a corner 9 minutes into the second half to bring the Vikings within 1. CCA got great defensive play from their back line and goal keeper Isabella DeCotis (‘25). Anna Jukanovich (‘25) also displayed a fantastic work rate in the midfield as CCA won 2-1.

The Varsity Girls (1-0) have their home-opener game this Friday, September 13th at 3:30 pm against Chapel Hill Chauncey Hall.

Tuesday, 9/10:

JV Boys Soccer: CCA 4 vs. Cambridge School of Weston 1

Boys JV soccer has started the season strong, continuing the unbeaten streak from last season. Nathan Cerqueria (’27) earned a hat trick, including a handball penalty that he forced out of CSW, and Jacob Chewning (’28) got the 4th goal for the team. The only goal CCA conceded was from a penalty late in the second half.

The JV Boys’ next game is away at Brimmer & May on Wednesday, September 18.

Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs. Cambridge School of Weston 0 (25-11, 27-25, 25-20)

The Girls Varsity Volleyball team began their season on Tuesday, September 10, with a straight sets win over CSW: 25-11, 27-25, 25-20. As the scores suggest, after a quick win in their first set, the girls had to dig deep to win the second and third. The team was led on attack by Leanna Rothier (’27), who had 13 service aces, 6 kills, and 2 assists during the match. Julia Ray (’25) and Fernanda Silva-Fernandes (’25) kept CSW on their heels from behind the service line, and Libby Beville (’25) and Shirley Whitmore (’25) were all over the court on defense. It was a great opening to the season!

The Varsity Girls’ next game is away at Landmark School on Thursday, September 12.

Girls JV Volleyball: CCA 2 vs. Cambridge School of Weston 1 (11-25, 25-14, 15-12)

The JV Volleyball team began their season with an exciting, 3-set win over the Cambridge School of Weston: 11-25, 25-14, 15-12. As the scores indicate, after getting off to a slow start, the girls roared back to win the match by taking the second and third sets. The team was led by the strong serves of Julia Baia (’27), Mackenzie Curtis (’27), Evie Crowell (’28), and Chloe D. (’29), while the defense was anchored by Lydia Choi (’27) and Copley Shea (’28). It was a great start to the season!

The JV Girls’ next game is away at Landmark School on Thursday, September 12.

Wednesday, 9/11:

Boys Middle School Soccer: CCA 10 vs. Bradford Christian Academy 2

The Middle School Boys Soccer team dominated play from the opening whistle as they defeated Bradford Christian Academy by the final score of 10-2. Goals were scored by Cole M (’29); Tyler C (’29); Hudson B (’29), Trace P (’29), Judah L (’29), Jayden K (’30), and Daniel T (’29). Outstanding effort by the entire squad in this good team win!

MEET OUR TEAM

Join us in welcoming Graham Jackson to the USLR team!

Graham joined the USLR faculty team this year as an experienced classroom instructor with his BA in Literature from Patrick Henry College and his M.Ed from Gordon College. Graham has an interest in museum education, foreign languages and running.

What will your role be here? Teaching 9th and 11th grade English, and team-teaching Rhetoric 12 (Senior Thesis).

Can you tell us a bit about your background and previous experience? I have been teaching English for several years now—starting as a sub in public schools for grades K-12, and moving toward private Christian education, as well as online teaching. I was homeschooled from grades 1-12, which was a wonderful experience, and where I got my love for reading and creative writing (thanks to my parents’ unwavering dedication). I went to Patrick Henry College for my undergrad (a small Christian college in Virginia), where I earned my degree in English, and then went on to get my Masters of Education at Gordon College.

What drew you to join CCA? CCA’s emphasis on classical education—the stories that form our culture and who we are as human beings—and the faith that drives us closer to God through the mountains and valleys of life. Both elements came through clearly to me from the first moment I set foot on campus, and even more so as I continue to get to know the people here. What a special place and community!

What are you most looking forward to this school year? Sharing my love for the written word with others, and quite honestly, just having fun as part of the greater CCA community, whether it be engaging in House competitions, or sharing life stories and prayer requests during Homeroom/Advisory times.

Favorite food: I love a good taco salad. Or nachos. Or some combination thereof.

Favorite book: This question is a bane for me as an English teacher. There are too many to choose from! For right now, I will say The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

Favorite Bible Verse: Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for harm, to give you a future and a hope.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work? Walking my dog Avery, playing classical piano, theatre (I was involved in my college’s theatre group throughout undergrad), long-distance running, hiking, watching movies or shows with friends, and writing poetry. And, of course, reading.

Share a fun or unique fact about yourself: I have two adopted sisters (one from Guatemala, the other from China), and I actually went to China when I was 10 when my family adopted my youngest sister. It was quite the experience!

If you were to participate in the USLR Lip Sync Battle, which song would you sing? I am not entirely sure, but probably something jazzy by Michael Buble.

If you were to participate in the GS Star Wars dress-down day, which character would you be? A Jedi of some sort. I wish cloaks were coming back into fashion nowadays.

Is there anything you’d like to say to the community as you start your journey here?

I’m grateful to God that I am here. He continues to show me His goodness and grace and love through CCA’s community as I have begun to get more plugged in over the past couple weeks. I am excited and expectant for what He has in store as His story for our lives proceeds to unfold this year.

Welcome to the team, Graham!
