Cougars Round Up
Boys Varsity Basketball:
12/4: CCA 37, Landmark 32
The Cougars improved to 2-1 with the non-league win at Landmark. Leading the visitors was junior guard Bennet Plosker, who netted 21 points. Also contributing offensively was junior guard Isaac Portugal (6) points and eighth grader Jacob Chewning, whose two free throws in the final minute sealed the win. Juniors Jacob Libby and Theo Ostrowski both played stellar all-around defense.
12/6: CCA 62, BISB 47
The Cougars improved to 3-1 (2-0 in the MBIL), coming back from a four-point deficit on the back of junior guard Bennett Plosker’s 28 points. Also contributing offensively for the visitors were freshman Dimitrie Farcas, junior Theo Ostrowski, junior Isaac Portugal and eighth-grader Jacob Chewning. Matt Stuart, Jacob Libby, Solomon Ngethe and Tim Soria all played solid defense.
12/8: Charlie A Tournament
First Game: CCA 47, Bancroft 80
The Varsity boys went up against a much more talented team – the best team they will play all season. They did everything they could possibly do, but for the second time this season Bancroft simply had too much.
Here’s what Coach Bradford had to say:
“Please read and understand. That is not the story of Friday night.
As I was walking across the court after the game on the way to our locker room, a nice lady intercepted me on the court. She introduced herself as a mother of one of the players on the Watkinson girls team, which was playing after us. She explained how she played professionally, herself, with her other daughter currently playing for the Baylor University women’s team, coaching many of her daughters’ teams along the way. This is what she said:
“In all my years of watching basketball I have never seen a team play like yours did. You guys had more grit and teamwork than anybody I have ever seen. I was so inspired. I was in awe!”
She went on to say how not only did she share these sentiments, but so did the people around her. She passed along the admiration of how every last person on our team – whether on the floor or on the bench – poured their hearts out until the final buzzer. For us, it’s an attitude we might take for granted. But hearing it from somebody who has obviously seen A LOT of basketball, it was powerful.
I asked her if she would be willing to come into our locker room to tell the guys what she had just told me, which she was happy to do. She went around the room and highlighted every single player and how impressed she was. Every. Single. Player.
“Nobody is going to remember the score tonight, but they will remember how you guys played.”
I hope it resonated with the players, because of all the years I have coached this moment certainly will forever stand out. This is a credit to the players. This is a credit to the parents who have raised them. This is a credit to the assistant coaches who pour in so much of their time. And this is a credit to the CCA community’s mindset.”
Girls Varsity Basketball:
12/4: CCA 64, BCA 28
The CCA GVBB team defeated Bradford Christian Academy by the final score of 64-28. Liza Minogue led the scoring with 18 while Julia Ray chipped in 14. Nine players tallied points in a balanced attack.
12/8-12/9: Tournament
First Game: CCA 39, Bancroft 32
The CCA GVBB team defeated Bancroft in the first round of the Charlie A Tournament in Worcester on Friday afternoon. Featuring a balanced scoring sheet with 3 players each having 10 points the Lady Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season. The final score was 39-32 in this strong team effort.
Second Game: CCA 25, Watkinson 64
The CCA GVBB team lost to a very strong Watkinson team in the final game of the Charlie A Tournament at Bancroft School. The final score was 64-25. Liza Minogue led the CCA scoring with 10.
Boys JV Basketball:
12/4: CCA 16, Landmark 35
The JV boys came out ready to play and battle a tough Landmark Team. The first half was low-scoring for both sides. CCA’s zone defense was on point as they stifled Landmark’s offense. Nick, Zeke, and Wes anchored the backline for defense while Spencer and Jacob shut down Landmark’s guards. Offensively, strong drives by Spencer and Nate created some fouls and scoring opportunities. Nick and Wes also battled Landmark’s big men hard and did a great job getting rebounds preventing Landmark from getting 2nd chance opportunities. Andrew, Arman, and Kaden all came into the game and kept up the stellar defensive effort. Going into halftime the Cougars were down by just one point. CCA took the lead (12-10) a few minutes into the 2nd half. Unfortunately, that was followed by a 26-4 Landmark run to end the game. THe boys showed great effort and enthusiasm. It always hurts to lose but in life, losses are always the greatest teachers.
12/6: CCA 21, Pingree 56
The JV boys had their last game before Christmas break and had to face a next-level opponent in Pingree. Although they did not win on the scoreboard, they did honor God with their enthusiasm, their effort and their respect for others. Notable mentions for the game are Spencer who led in scoring, Wes who was able to score and rebound well against much larger opponents, Nate who handled the ball well and hit a three-pointer, Tristan who showed toughness and hustle up and down the court and Kaden who also drained a three-pointer.
