Why Covenant?“Our good friends, the Singletons, shared CCA with us and we are so grateful they did! We first encountered CCA through a Discover Covenant event. Our initial impression was ‘This is exactly where our children need to be.’ In this ever-changing secular world, our children need a strong educational foundation rooted in faith. CCA is able to provide such an environment.
Our daughter Jaclyn joined CCA last year in 5th grade. After the first month, we noticed a wonderful transformation from a shy, anxious child to a confident and social girl. CCA has been the best decision we could have made for our daughter. Our son is joining his sister this year, attending 4th grade at CCA. He has already made a positive transition socially and enjoys going to school each day (something we could not say last year). Also, because God is so good, I too have joined the CCA community as one of the new second-grade teachers! We are grateful that our family is a part of this wonderful community.” – The Burns Family

House Cupdate:
Last Friday’s Scooter Relay Grand Prix was an exciting neck and neck finish between Bojaxhiu and King. After trailing on laps two and three, King overtook Bojaxhiu on the last lap powered by the determined effort of senior Jacob Libby. King finished in first, followed by Bojaxhiu in second, Ten Boom in third, and Wilberforce in fourth. The single-lap faculty showdown saw Mr. Offner and Mr. Burgdorf from Bojaxhiu come out on top, followed by Ten Boom in second, King in third, and Wilberforce in fourth. The new updated totals in our year-long race to the house cup have King in first place with 1,060 points, Ten Boom in second with 961 points, Bojaxhiu in third with 884 points, and Wilberforce in fourth with 693 points.
Omelette Adventures: Cooking Skills with Mr. Burgdorf
Last week, Mr. Burgdorf kicked off a culinary journey for his Logic School advisory class by teaching the art of omelette-making! This fun and engaging session introduced students to basic cooking techniques, showcasing how a few simple ingredients can be transformed into a delicious dish. While some students demonstrated their kitchen prowess, others discovered the joy of cooking for the first time, with even the simple task of making cereal being a new adventure. It was a productive and flavorful experience that left everyone eager to explore more in the kitchen!

Cougars RoundUp!
Wednesday, October 23rd:
Girls JV Volleyball: CCA 2 vs. Pingree 0 (25-22, 25-9)
What an incredible game to wrap up the season. The girls started out a little slow due to a lack of communication but they regrouped and came in strong for the second set!
Boys JV Soccer: CCA 8 vs. Pingree 1
The JV Boys ended the season with a bang! It was phenomenal to see real improvement across the board, with creative passing, dominant possession, and shots being fired in from all areas. Nathan Cerqueira (’27) got a hat-trick, with two more goals each from Jacob Williamson (’26) and Jacob Chewning (’28), with Colin Moll (’25) chipping in one goal.
Thursday, October 24th:
Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs. Newman 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-19)
The Girls Varsity Volleyball team hosted Newman for their final regular season match – and Senior Night! – and they emerged victorious in straight sets: 25-23, 25-17, 25-19. Thanks to the energy of the night and the crowd, the Cougars came roaring out to a double-digit lead in the first set, only to see Newman mount a strong comeback… but as they have done all season, the girls made a key play at the key moment and finished the set strong. The second and third sets then featured more consistent play from the Cougars on defense and attack. The seniors, fittingly for their senior night, were the story of the match. Riley Baird (’25) had one of her best setting nights of the season, tallying 33 assists on the night. Julia Ray (’25) led the attack with 13 kills on 23 swings, and Magdalen Miller (’25) had her best offensive output of the season with 9 kills on 13 swings. From behind the service line, the Cougars were paced by the consistency of Ella Chewning (’25), Fernanda Silva-Fernandes (’25), and Shirley Whitmore (’25). On defense, Madeleine Trumbull (’25), Magdalen, and Ella made a number of important blocks and saves. With this win, the Cougars finished their in-conference regular season schedule with a 12-0 record!
Friday, October 25th:
Boys Middle School Soccer: CCA 7 vs. BCA 0
The CCA 6th grade soccer team dominated Bradford Christian Academy by the score of 7-0. CCA goals were scored by Charlie S (3); Landon W, David P, Theo G and Caua M. Assists were tallied by David P (2), Landon W, Theo G, and Bernardo K. This was a strong overall effort with all three levels playing quality minutes. Congratulations to all the boys and thanks for helping to improve the MS soccer team.
Saturday, October 26th:
Girls Varsity Soccer: CCA 2 vs. Kents Hill 1
A brisk Fall Saturday evening under the lights of Gordon College’s Brigham Athletic Complex was the setting for a non-league, NEPSAC Class D match up between CCA and Kents Hill School (ME). A physical game early, the two teams traded great scoring chances but both came up empty. In the 15th minute, Anna Jukanovich (’25) played a great ball through the Kents Hill backline while striker Carys Walters (’25) ran onto the ball and finished a low shot past the Kents Hill keeper. A few minutes later, Kents Hill equalized on a CCA mistake. Kents Hill was gaining momentum when CCA created a chance and was fouled about 25 yards from goal. Anne Hammond (’25) stepped up and struck a missile into the back of the goal to reclaim the lead for CCA just 1 minute before halftime. The second half saw multiple opportunities for CCA, but also great team defending. CCA would see the game out and earn a hard fought 2-1 win to improve to 10-1-2 on the season.
Boys Varsity Soccer: CCA 0 vs. Kents Hill 0
What an incredible game for the CCA boy’s soccer team! This past Saturday, the Cougars versed Kents Hill in their game under the lights. Both teams entered the first half with much energy and determination. The teams were evenly matched, playing strong on both the offensive and defensive ends. Neither team scored in the first half, allowing suspense to build when the second half rolled around. Despite strong determination from both CCA and Kents Hill, neither team scored in the second. However, during the final five minutes, the Cougars ramped up their energy and played incredibly well. Jacob Libby (’25) and Matthew Stuart (’25) held the defensive end firm, while Caz Ostrowski (’25), the team’s goalie, had many excellent saves, never allowing Kents Hill to score. The game ended in a tie of 0-0. We can’t wait to see the boys bring this same incredible determination into their game this Thursday!
Tuesday, October 29th:
Girls Varsity Volleyball: CCA 3 vs. Gann 0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-16)
Our girls varsity volleyball team hosted Gann for an IGC semifinal playoff match on Tuesday, and they emerged victorious with a straight sets victory: 25-16, 25-20, 25-16. The match started slowly for both teams, but it livened up midway through the first set and on through the 2nd and 3rd. Both teams played good defense, but the service pressure and attacking from the Cougars proved to be too much for Gann. Leanna Rothier (’27) led the way for the Cougars with 12 kills (on 21 total attacks) and 8 service aces. Julia Ray (’25) and Magdalen Miller (’25) combined for an additional 11 kills on the night. On defense, Magdalen and Madeleine Trumbull (’25) were a disruptive presence all night with their big block at the net, and Ella Chewning (’25) had her most consistent all-around defensive game of the season.
Join us in welcoming Jason Lawrenz as CCA’s Athletic Director!Jason joined the Covenant team in 2011 serving as a teacher in the Upper School and school Chaplain. Earlier this year he took the Athletic Director position. Having served as the Head Varsity Volleyball coach for several years and assisting the former AD when needed, this was a natural fit and smooth transition.
What will your new role be here, and what are you most excited about? Athletic Director & Chaplain (formerly USLR Bible Teacher & Chaplain). I am excited about all of the opportunities that sports will afford players and coaches to deepen and demonstrate their faith in Jesus.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and previous experience? I joined CCA in 2011, and I have served as an Upper School Bible Teacher (as well as Algebra and Rhetoric) and the school Chaplain. Before coming to CCA, I was a youth pastor and education director for a local church on the North Shore. I have also been an adjunct theology instructor at Gordon College since 2012.
My sports background started when I was young, as I played soccer, basketball and baseball into my teenage years. I then rowed crew and played men’s volleyball at Wheaton College. I have been coaching since my sons were young. I have coached soccer and volleyball for several years, and I have also coached baseball.
Finally, there is a legacy of sports ministry in my family. My godfather, Henry Soles, was the chaplain of the Chicago Bulls during the 1990s – and so I was raised to see sports as fertile ground for the seed of the Gospel to be planted. It is both my calling and my privilege to serve as athletic director and chaplain at CCA.
What drew you to this position CCA? I love Jesus, I love pointing people to Jesus through his Word, I love CCA, I love working with young people, and I love sports. This position is a special opportunity to pursue these loves together.
Favorite food: Brisket from Franklin Barbeque in Austin, TX
Favorite books: Fantasy: The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien; Theology: Counterfeit Gods, by Tim Keller
Favorite Bible verse: Romans 8:38-39 (NIV) “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
What are your hobbies or interests outside of work? I love studying God’s Word. I love taking road trips with my family. I love coaching and playing sports. I love reading, particularly fantasy and theology. I love cooking.
Share a fun or unique fact about yourself: I took a few years off from sports in high school to pursue musical theater. I was cast in The King & I, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the Roof, and more.
What are you most looking forward to this school year? As the AD, I am looking forward to seeing our student-athletes praise Jesus with their talents and teamwork, and I am looking forward to the time I get to spend with coaches, captains, prefects, interns, and the athletics council.
As the Chaplain, I am looking forward to walking through our theme for this year with our school community, which will be about the incomparable beauty of Jesus.
As a parent, I am looking forward to how my sons will be blessed by the investment of the incredible faculty here at CCA.
If you were to participate in the GS Star Wars dress-down day, which character would you be? Probably Obi-Wan Kenobi or Qui-Gon Jinn
Is there anything you’d like to say to the community as you start your new role here? It is my honor to serve Jesus and to serve you. Go Cougars!
We are blessed to have you as part of our team, Jason. |
