Hour of Code for Grammar School

12/11/2016 - This week, as part of Computer Science Education Week, all students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 participated in Hour of Code. Mrs. Carlson visited K-3 classrooms to introduce the basic concepts of computer science through “unplugged” activities. Concepts included problem solving, algorithms, and code. Students helped write algorithms and used basic code to help move a character, Flurb, through a grid to a goal. Students in grades 4-6 completed Hour of Code tutorials in the computer lab on hourofcode.com, building code to complete puzzles, artwork, and games. Tutorials included characters from Angry Birds, Frozen, Minecraft, Star Wars, and others. It was a great week of learning about computer science and code, and all of the students did a super job and had lots of fun!

This special emphasis on Hour of Code has been adopted to enhance computer science offerings at Covenant. Grades 4-6 will continue to use Code.org curriculum, called Code Studio, throughout the school year. This will build on then basics started in Hour of Code and enable students to learn more advanced computer programming concepts. Mrs. Carlson plans to offer and after school club to make Code Studio lessons available to K-3 students.

Code Studio and Hour of Code are designed to inspire students to continue learning how technology improves real world relationships, connections, and life. Students learn: how the internet works; basic computer programming; logic, problem solving and creativity. Code Studio is an elementary school curriculum that allows even the youngest students to explore the limitless world of computing. The courses blend online, self-guided and self-paced tutorials with “unplugged”activities that require no computer at all. By the end of each course, students can create interactive games or stories that they can share with anyone.

Computer science is a foundation for every student. At CCA we are excited to introduce our youngest students to these critical 21st century skills.
